How to Change Your Stream URL on Alexa and Android (When You Switch Radio Hosts)

Moving from Shoutcast to Zeno.FM, Icecast to Radio.co, or any host to any other? Here's exactly how stream URL changes propagate to your Alexa Skill and Android app — and why it should always be free.

Every station changes streaming hosts eventually — providers get acquired, prices jump, servers migrate, an SSL renewal forces a new URL. What most station owners don't know until the moment it happens: changing the stream URL is not rebuilding anything. It's a configuration update. A day of work, at most, and with an honest provider, none of it costs a cent. That last part is worth insisting on, because some providers have turned this five-minute task into a recurring revenue stream.

Why Stream URLs Change

  • You switch providers outright — Shoutcast to Zeno.FM, anything to anything
  • Your host migrates servers or changes ports without asking you
  • You upgrade to HTTPS and the endpoint changes
  • You move between self-hosted and managed hosting
  • Your provider shuts down — it happens, regularly, in this industry

Every one of these ends the same way: yesterday's URL dies, and everything connected to it needs the new one.

What Happens on the Alexa Side

The skill points at a configured audio endpoint. Update the endpoint to the new HTTPS URL, resubmit, and pass through a quick re-certification — usually 1–2 days. Everything else survives untouched: invocation name, store listing, ratings, reviews, enabled listeners. Your listeners never know anything happened, which is exactly how it should be.

⚠️
Important

The classic migration mistake: pointing the skill at a redirect from the old URL instead of the new URL directly. Browsers follow redirects so the old link 'sort of works' in tests. Alexa devices follow them poorly or not at all. Always configure the skill with the new direct URL.

What Happens on the Android Side

Traditionally, Android apps embedded the stream URL at build time, so a change meant an app update through Google Play review — fast (1–3 days), automatic for users, listing and install counts untouched. The better modern approach skips even that: apps that load their stream URL from a remote config can be repointed instantly, no store review at all. If you're having an app built, ask which kind you're getting. It's a small detail that saves days of waiting every single time your URL changes, and it costs nothing to do right.

The Cost Question, Answered Bluntly

Updating a stream URL is minutes of work. Some services charge $20–$50 per change anyway, and their customers pay, because the change always arrives at the worst possible moment — a dead host, an urgent migration — when arguing about pricing is the last thing anyone wants to do. When you choose who builds your skill or app, get the answer to one question in writing: "What does a stream URL change cost after launch?" The right answer is zero.

💡
The question to ask any provider

"If I change my streaming host next year, what does it cost to update my skill and app?" Zero is the only honest answer — and it's the answer here: free lifetime stream URL, logo, and description updates on everything we've ever launched.

The Migration Sequence That Avoids Dead Air

  1. 1Set up the new host and verify the new stream plays in VLC — and starts with https://
  2. 2Keep the old stream running through the transition — do not cancel early, no matter how tempting
  3. 3Send the new URL to whoever maintains your skill and app — or update the endpoints yourself
  4. 4Test on a real Echo and a real Android phone once the updates are live
  5. 5Keep station name, logo, and description identical so nothing looks different to listeners
  6. 6Only after everything checks out: cancel the old hosting

Run in that order, and the migration is invisible — listeners keep listening, skills keep resolving, and the only evidence anything changed is your own hosting bill.

Updates Free, Forever

Every skill and app we launch includes free lifetime stream URL, logo, and description updates. Switch hosts whenever you need. You pay once, when your station first goes live.
